‘Once the door is closed, what lies behind it disappears from view. Is home a place of warmth and shelter, or a quiet site of tension?’
Transformed a historical Victorian building, safehouse 1, into a reimagined space of home. This exhibition features works by 28 international artists, spanning sculpture, painting, video, and craft.
The space is organised through both domestic function and conceptual themes. Artworks inhabit and shape a series of rooms including the living room, the inner room, the hidden room, and the bedroom. Each space unfolds a different layer of what “home” can hold.
Here, the home is not only a refuge, but also a site of confinement and suppression, as well as a witness to resilience and resistance. Family relationships shift between intimacy and conflict, and what remains unspoken gradually forms a quiet, layered history.
The exhibition examines power structures within the domestic sphere, including its coexisting roles, unseen labour, and individual narratives often overlooked by dominant social frameworks. It challenges the stereotypical idea of what “home” is, and who it is for.
Within this space, the home is not fixed or singular. It can hold care and control, silence and resistance, intimacy and distance all at once.
